Green Cleaning Recipes - Floor Cleaner

There's just something about a freshly mopped floor that makes me want to roll on it like a little kid. There can be clutter all over my counters, but when the floor is clean, the house feels cleaner to me!

We have a vast amount of tile in our house. Our house isn't huge, but most of it is tile. The lovely picture below is from when we first arrived at the house after closing. That's just some of the tile I get to mop. Thankfully the builder chose dirt colored tile, which helps me when I don't get the chance to mop as often as I would like.

I've been using "green" cleaning since before my children were born. It became especially important to me after having a child diagnosed with asthma. Plus, I was never a fan of those "cleaning supply" smells. Eww!

There are plenty of ready made environmentally friendly products out there. I'm cheap, many of those products are expensive. I do tend to buy Method products at Target when they are on sale. I love the grapefruit scent! Yum!

So in honor of my mopping last night, I'll post the green cleaning mopping recipe I've used for the last year. I've tried a few and this one smells fairly nice, is cheap to make, and doesn't leave too much streaking.
Floor Cleaner
  • 1/8 cup liquid soap
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup white vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup peppermint herb tea (peppermint has antibacterial qualities)
Combine the liquid soap, vinegar or lemon juice, and tea in a pail with 3 gallons warm water. Swirl until sudsy. Thanks to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency where I found this recipe and others.
Many thanks go to Biker Boy who cut my vacuuming and mopping time in half last night. He vacuumed while I followed with the mop. You gotta love a man who vacuums!
Have you found any green cleaning recipes that you like? Please share if you have, I'm always willing to try some new recipes. I'll share some other recipes that I use in the future.
