Christmas Countdown Calendar

We’re in full Christmas swing here!

The outdoor lights are up, the tree is decorated, and the Christmas music is loaded in the CD player and playing.

The kids are counting down the days to the next grandparent visit and Christmas Day. Literally….counting….down.

Yesterday we made a Christmas Count Down Calendar and hung it up.

I searched the Internet quickly for one I could print off. I found this one at Activity Village that I liked the design of and used as a model for the front of our calendar. Yet I still didn’t find what I was looking for.

I wanted something to use with the kids’ Nativity scene. We have a lovely ceramic one with a bazillion pieces, but it’s just too tempting for the kids. They want to play with it. Ceramic pieces + tile floor + young children = not a good idea. Grandma got them a plastic Nativity set last year and they are having a blast with it. Last year Chewy upgraded Baby Jesus to her princess castle. The stable wasn’t adequate enough for a King!

Back to the calendar….the front side has the number. 1 for December 1st and 2 for December 2nd, and so on. Get the idea?  Glue, computer print-outs, card stock, and ribbon from the tree is all I used to make this.

The backside has a main idea, something that relates to their Nativity scene. Mary, Joseph, shepherd, stable, and so on. I put a short Bible verse with it and an additional reading that relates.

The kids pluck off the number corresponding to the day and see what the main idea is. We ask the kids about it and “converse” in preschool terms. That can get pretty interesting. We just read the short verse right now. The kids don’t have long attention spans.

I also put some additional sheets with “special days” on them attached to the day they occur. Things like when Christmas break begins, the grandparents arrive, and holiday parties.

We’ll probably use this calendar for a couple of years until I decide to make something else. It works for now. How do you countdown the days to Christmas?

btw...if you're interested in the calendar I made and don't want to take the time to type out your own numbers and verses, send me an email and I can send you back a pdf of the calendar I made.  I have no idea how to post the pdf (anyone know?).  Enjoy!
