Snow Days - Making Hot Chocolate

Don’t you love snow days? Especially the ones that include hot chocolate?!

We got quite a bit of snow last night and a sunny day today. The kids and I ventured out to play in the snow. Snow Angels. Snow Balls. Sledding. Snowmen. Shovels. Snow Dancing. Snow Fun.  I even got snow down my snowpants.  Plus, I bashed up my knee trying to keep the sled from hitting the house (whoops!) We did it all and then went in for hot chocolate.

My hot chocolate recipe varies by what I have on hand and how I want to make it. I didn’t have white sugar on hand, since I used it up in the sugar cookies. I substituted brown sugar and used half the amount. I never measure when making hot cocoa, so these are my best guesses. It’s fun to make it different every time.  Sometimes I use Dove chocolates rather than cocoa.  Yum!

Stove Top Recipe (1 serving)
1-cup milk
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cocoa
1 tsp vanilla

In a small pan, warm up milk, sugar and cocoa. Do not let it boil. Just before boiling, remove from heat and add vanilla.

Microwave Recipe (1 Serving)
Same ingredients as above. Warm milk up in microwave and then add sugar, cocoa, and vanilla.

Add the extras. My kids picked marshmallows, while I picked whipped cream. I even added chocolate covered peppermint sticks. What a treat! We drank our cocoa with angel sugar cookies in honor of our snow day.

Go ahead and make yourself a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy the day, whether or not you have snow!
