Scooter and Chewy Review - Atlas Sprout 17 Snowshoe

Here we go again.

Another review by a 5-year-old and 2-year-old.  This time it's of Atlas Sprout 17 Snowshoes.

Let’s see if you can follow this:

Me: What do you think of your snowshoes? (Atlas Sprout 17 Snowshoe)
Scooter: I love to walk in them.
Chewy: He has warm ones.

M: Do you like to wear snowshoes or boots when you hike?
S: Boots.
C: I like snowshoes.
M: (Perhaps I should have said “hike in the snow.”)

M: Why did we get you snowshoes?
S: Because.
M: Why?
S: Because we can walk in them.

M: Is it fun snowshoeing as a family?
S: Yeah. I like walking in them.
C: I ride in the backpack.
M: Do you like to ride in the backpack?
C: Uh huh.
M: Why?
C: Because I do.

M: Why do we wear snowshoes?
S: So we can’t trip.
M: (I think he means “slip”.)
C: I like to wear snowshoes though.

M: How much snow do you need to snowshoe?
S: 100 pounds of snow.
C: Snow in the sky.
S: There’s a 100 pounds today.
M: There’s a lot of snow today. (Really, the picture below was taken an hour before this posting!)

Mommy Review: We’ve taken up snowshoeing as family activity this winter. We love to hike when there isn’t snow, so why not a little hiking in the snow? Scooter got a pair of Atlas Sprout 17 Snowshoes from REI. They are extremely easy to use and we’ve even let Chewy try them out. They have a steel toe crampon that gives excellent grip on packed snow trails. They do require a little different walking stance than Scooter is use to, so he’s taken a few falls. (No dragging his toes and shuffling his feet!) Though Scooter tends to fall on purpose a lot and even falls when we’re hiking on dirt. He must get that from me.

Scooter loves to run with the snowshoes through the deep snow and get a “rooster tail” of snow up behind him. The snowshoes provide some floatation on the deep snow, but do sink in a bit. They are really great on packed snow trails. We usually hike out an hour, play in the snow a bit, and then hike back. Scooter has never once complained that they’re uncomfortable. The snowshoes track really well, but do make a bit of noise on the trail. I guess that’s to be expected. Overall, the kids really enjoy them and we really like their ease of use.

If you do a lot of hiking, you'll love snowshoes in the snow.  We were hiking a popular trail and had a group of ladies coming at us down a switchback.  They were wearing hiking boots and sliding their way carefully and slowly down the hill.  Scooter was able to run up and down the hill without a problem with his snowshoes on.  In another year we’ll be adding some new snowshoes to the mix for Chewy. Upcoming reviews on Men’s Atlas snowshoes and Women’s Charlie Yukons in the future.

What do you enjoy doing in the snow (if you get it)?  Enjoy!
