Copy Cake

(Have you entered the giveaway?)

Oh so many different types of castle cakes. Oh so little time.

I cheat. I copy. I make it simpler. Kinda.

Chewy requested a castle cake for her third birthday. (Happy 3rd Birthday Princess!)

I obliged. I could have done a round-tiered cake with ice cream cones for towers, but I don’t have ice cream cones.

I could have bought a Wilton Enchanted Castle Cake Pan, but I’m cheap frugal. I’d only use it once a year, at most. So that didn’t justify the cost. Plus, I don’t want to have to store it.

You can see the Wilton Enchanted Castle Cake here at the Wilton website. Lovely. It’s not that I’m not fond of Wilton. I do like them. Yes, I do. I use their frosting bags, tips, couplers, and cupcake liners. I’m just not spending money on a castle cake pan.

So I copied the castle design onto a 9x13 cake. So easy to make a cake in a 9x13 pan and leave it in there for easy storage.

I made a strawberry cake box mix (without oil, I just add more water) and used the high altitude recipe. Chewy requested strawberry cake.

I frosted it with white frosting (whew….I had just enough). It wasn’t pretty, but we were just going to eat that cake. I tinted frosting for the rest of the cake and spent way too much time decorating it. I was up past my bedtime. I followed this outline from the Wilton website. (Find it here.)  Thank goodness I only decorate cakes twice a year.  I didn't have the exact tips called for in the directions, but had ones that were close.

I used a bamboo skewer to outline my design before piping on the frosting. Then I just filled it in.

Then the next day we admired it for the time it took to sing “Happy Birthday” and then dug into it. Yum.

Happy Birthday Chewy!

Do you make copy cakes? Any favorites?

Psst…check out Scooter’s birthday cakes here.  And don't forget to enter the giveaway I'm hosting thru Friday here.

  3. Precious! I'm really impressed ... I've never decorated a cake in my whole life. As a matter of fact, I have a post scheduled to go up tomorrow morning about how I just ordered our 2-year-old's birthday cake from our friend the baker! But the castle is wonderful ... great job!
