Middle Grade Middle Age Historical Fiction

Here's a book post...because we love books!

Last year we studied the Middle Ages for history and I found books to read aloud that went with what we were studying. These are all historical fiction. We talked about what historical fiction was and the kids even wrote their own short stories that were historical fiction.

If you're looking for historical fiction books geared towards middle schoolers and above....these are ones we highly recommend.

Anna of Byzantium by Tracy Barrett

The Bronze Arrow by Elizabeth George Speare

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park

The Kite Rider by Geraldine McCaughrean

Crispin and The Cross of Lead by Avi

Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman

Bound by Donna Jo Napoli

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle

King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green

My favorite was "Bound" because it was a fairy tale retelling, but quite a few of the others run a close second. My daughter enjoyed "Catherine, Called Birdy," and I did selectively leave a few parts out as I reading it due to her age at the time (fourth grade). My son enjoyed "The Kite Rider" and recommended it to his dad to read on one of his trips to China.

Do you have any other Medieval Historical Fiction Recommendations?
